IP Phone Buyer's Guide for 2026
How to pick the right desk endpoint by call volume, codec support, and PoE class — without overpaying.
Choosing the right IP phone is rarely about the headline spec sheet. It's about matching a daily workflow — line keys, programmable BLFs, codec headroom — to the actual humans answering calls.
Start with concurrent call profile. A receptionist routinely juggling six lines needs a different chassis than a knowledge worker handling two scheduled meetings a day. Match line keys 1:1 to peak load, then add 30% headroom for growth.
Codec support is the second filter. G.722 is the floor for HD voice. Opus is a strong addition if your softclients negotiate it. Skip anything that maxes out at G.711.
Finally, plan power. PoE Class 2 covers most mid-tier phones. Class 3 is required for color touchscreens and sidecars. Size your switch budget accordingly.
